Where Birk Still Waits in the Heart of Home

Where Birk Still Waits

A fictional remembrance story set in Norway.

Astrid lived beside a quiet fjord near Ålesund with her Norwegian Forest Cat, Birk.

Every morning, before Astrid left for work at the ferry terminal, Birk followed her to the garden gate. By afternoon, he would be waiting on the old stone wall, his thick silver coat moving gently in the sea wind.

Even during winter, Birk always came outside to welcome her home. Astrid often saw his paw prints crossing the fresh snow before she saw him.

After Birk passed away, the first snowfall felt unbearably empty. The garden was white, but there were no small tracks leading towards the gate.

Astrid chose a FurLunea Custom Metal Photo Stake featuring Birk’s portrait and placed it beside the rowan tree where he loved to sleep.

She added the words:

Birk

You always knew the way home.

Now, when Astrid returns from work, she still looks towards the garden gate. The metal memorial catches the pale northern light, and for one gentle moment, it feels as though Birk is waiting there again.
