The Small Sound in the Danish Night
A fictional remembrance story set in Denmark.
During the long winter evenings in Copenhagen, Maja often worked late beside her apartment window. Her little golden hamster, Nisse, would wake as the city became quiet.
Nisse was named after the small, kindhearted creatures from Danish folklore. Every night, he filled his cheeks with food, rearranged his bedding and ran on his wheel while Maja worked.
The gentle sound became part of her evenings. It reminded her that she was never alone.
One snowy night, the power went out. Maja lit a candle and held Nisse inside the pocket of her woollen cardigan. He stayed there peacefully until the lights returned. From then on, that cardigan became his favourite place to hide.
When Nisse passed away, Maja found the nights unbearably still.

She chose FurLunea’s Personalise Your Memorial and created a tribute using his photograph, his name and a tiny illustration of the woollen pocket he had loved.
She added the words:
Nisse
The smallest friend made the quietest nights feel warm.
The memorial now sits beside her desk. When winter returns and snow gathers outside the window, Maja looks at Nisse’s little face and remembers the comforting sound that once filled the room.
