Otso Always Came Back

A fictional remembrance story set in Finland.

Every winter morning, Jari followed the same cross country ski trail through the forests near Kuusamo.

His Finnish Lapphund, Otso, always ran ahead through the snow. Every few minutes, he would stop, turn around and wait until Jari appeared between the birch trees.

Otso never allowed him to fall too far behind.

As Jari grew older, his pace became slower, but Otso adjusted without being asked. He stayed closer, walking beside the skis instead of racing ahead.

After Otso passed away, Jari could not return to the trail. The forest felt too quiet, and there was nobody waiting for him around the next bend.

Jari kept a small amount of Otso’s soft fur and placed it inside a FurLunea Fur or Ashes Memorial Necklace.

On the back, he engraved:

Otso

Still waiting for me.

Months later, Jari finally returned to the forest. He wore the necklace beneath his wool jumper, close to his heart.

This time, when he reached the bend, nobody was waiting in the snow.

But Jari touched the necklace and continued forward, knowing Otso had never truly left him behind.
