The Path Lotte Never Forgot

A Story from Germany

Every Sunday morning, Matthias walked through the Black Forest with his miniature schnauzer, Lotte.

Lotte knew every path. She recognised the sound of Matthias reaching for his hiking boots and waited beside the front door before he had even picked up her lead.

During winter, she bounded through the snow. In autumn, she disappeared beneath fallen leaves and returned with twigs caught in her beard. Whenever Matthias stopped to rest, Lotte sat beside him and watched the forest in complete silence.

For twelve years, they followed the same trail.

After Lotte passed away, Matthias could not walk there for several months. The path felt too quiet without the sound of her paws behind him.

One spring morning, he finally returned.

He carried a FurLunea Pet Memorial Plaque engraved with Lotte’s photograph, name and the words:

You always knew the way home.

Matthias placed the plaque beside a beech tree near their favourite resting place. It was not a grave. Lotte’s ashes remained at home. It was simply a place where their happiest memories could continue to live.

Now, Matthias walks the trail every Sunday again.

When he reaches the tree, he pauses beside Lotte’s plaque and remembers her racing through the leaves, waiting patiently at every turn and looking back to make sure he was still following.

Lotte no longer walks beside him, but the path still belongs to both of them.
